Boyle Street Community Garden is one of the older established gardens in the city. Situated in the heart of the Boyle/McCauley community, we offer local residents an opportunity to garden in a supportive and 'cooperative' environment. Our garden is an excellent example of people and agencies working together to grow a beautiful garden.
In the initial stages of our garden, the City Planning Department was instrumental in getting our garden started. Today, we still reap the benefits of the many relationships formed in our early years with local organizations and residents.
Each year the City roto-tills our site. We have an underground pipe system connected to the nearby Community Centre that runs to a series of standpipes throughout the garden. Gardeners can then water by hose or pail. We do compost, though we are not able to make enough to satisfy our yearly requirements. With the help of local businesses, we seem to get enough donations of seeds and bedding plants. Gardeners also supply their own materials.
The site is fenced and locked to deter vandalism.
Unique to our garden site is our straw bale tool shed. This beautiful structure is constructed with straw bales and treated with a cement finish to the outside and inside walls. Other community gardens are welcomed to inquire about our shed.
Challenges, Needs, and Barriers:
