About Us

Sustainable Food Edmonton is the umbrella organization that offers the programs of Cityfarm, Community Gardens and Little Green Thumbs.

First established in 1989, the Personal Community Support Association (PCSA) was filed as a non-profit under the Alberta Companies Act, Part 9 and a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency.

The organization turned its focus on local food initiatives in the 1990's.  With a dedicated group of volunteers, the organization mobilized support with various stakeholders including government, the agricultural industry and Edmonton's citizens to develop programs like Cityfarm and Little Green Thumbs.  These programs offered communities innovative opportunities for experiential learning and awareness of local food production, food sustainability and food justice.

In 2003, they welcomed the Community Gardens Network (CGN) to their program offerings.  CGN served a number of community gardens throughout the Edmonton region and acted as a resource to new and emerging gardens throughout the city. This work is now done through the organization's Community Garden Program.

In 2011, the Board came up with a new name to better reflect the organization's vision and mission, Sustainable Food Edmonton. With 3 key programs now in place and work being done on various other food movement initiatives like food policy and food security, Sustainable Food Edmonton is poised to help further the discussion on where our food comes from, how it impacts our lives and how we can stay connected to the planet that sustains us.
