How to Participate in Little Green Thumbs
Registration for the 2011/2012 Little Green Thumbs Program is now closed. Please visit this page in June to register for the 2012/2013 School Year.
The Little Green Thumbs Program consists of all necessary indoor gardening materials and supporting documentation. Before the start of the program, teachers/leaders will be invited to a training session. We will also train "Growing Facilitators", volunteers from the public or from your school, to help you install light and grow boxes and work with the children in your indoor garden throughout the duration of the program. The program includes phone or e-mail support and a visit by the program coordinator.
Location
This program is available in schools and child/youth service agencies in Edmonton. Please contact us by phone or e-mail about program availability in other areas of the province.
Program Fee and Contributions
We are able to offer subsidies to a limited number of schools and agencies. Priority will be given to organizations that represent a significant number of children/youth and families with high needs, but if space is available, other organizations will also be accepted.
Participating organizations are requested to make the following contributions:
- Document and share your outcomes or learning goals;
- Document children’s responses to the garden and associated activities;
- Share three lesson ideas;
- Share photos of children who have permission from a parent/guardian;
- Record and share your success/challenges with the indoor garden;
- Complete a final program evaluation.
Please note: the use of an indoor grow lamp will result in an increase in your electricity bill.
Program Schedule and Application
Applications are accepted any time. However to be considered for the current school term, applications must be received before September 10. The information session will be held in October or November. The indoor garden will be set up and seeds are planted in January, followed by the transplanting session in early February. Your indoor garden can be maintained until the end of the school year. In subsequent years, you may choose to start the garden in October or January.
