LITTLE GREEN THUMBS KIDS GARDEN CONTEST

Since 2019, the Little Green Thumbs program through Sustainable Food Edmonton started hosting a Kids Garden Contest for students to participate in each year. Our goal is to engage students, teachers and parents in a fun contest that allows students to express their creativity and stimulate their imagination around growing food. Below is a snapshot of contributions from students over the years.

2024 Contest for Classrooms - ‘Create a Fairy Garden’

Our contest was great fun for the students and teachers involved. The images below show how students used their imagination and creativity in so many ways. From clay structures to found objects and loose parts, drawings and models…the wee creatures must be so pleased!

From Aleda Patterson School: “During the planning stages of children designing their own fairy garden they began by sketching imaginative ideas and intricate designs, dreaming up magical landscapes for our Bee garden. With their plans in hand, they set out to bring these visions to life by gathering natural materials like sticks, rocks, moss, and wood chips. Adding a personal touch, they built and designed structures from clay bringing their designs to life. To complete the project, the children wrote letters to the fairies, describing the thoughtful layout of their fairy gardens to guide the fairies through each bee garden. This experience not only nurtured their creativity but also built a deep appreciation for nature and storytelling.”

At Hilwie Hamdon School, Ms Seal’s students shared drawings and models of a fairy garden and the class even had a planning session with a landscape architect. Plans for the construction of their Fairy Garden are in the works!

We love all the submissions and want to thank our generous sponsors for the wonderful prizes:
